“The Breadwinner” is a celebration of the most unique barrels of a given vintage. Whereas many winery blends are the product of what’s left behind, the blending trials for The Breadwinner are where Stage Left starts. They begin by selecting and setting aside the most unique barrels from each lot. “Most unique” can mean the smokiest, earthiest, pepperiest, spiciest, purest expression of its vineyard or simply the most complex barrel in a lot. The goal is to find the best blend possible of these unique barrels. In 2013, all of these grapes were hand picked, cluster sorted, berry sorted, and fermented in small batches. The wines were aged in oak barrels (25% new French and Hungarian) for 22 months.
